Best 3D Scenes In Avatar (Home Version)

Avatar if nothing else will be long remembered as the film that has brought 3D to the masses once again. Will this version of 3D be the one that sticks, who knows? What is for sure though is that in order to stand a chance the home 3D experience has to be on a par with what you can see in the cinema. The recent Sky 3D release of Avatar gives a great chance to compare and contrast and we think the home experience stands up well. So if you’re looking for some stand out bits to show off to your friends you’ll want to check these out:-

Security Patrol (approx 25-28 mins) – The jungle literally comes alive in this scene as Jake scopes out the science teams surroundings. The bits where he brushes past the plant life is particularly impressive. The horned beasties also look a world apart in 3D. I’ve watched this scene a dozen times and have yet to experience any crosstalk with it so a definite home run for impressing your mates. Unfortunately the very fast paced chase scene that follows doesn’t stand up so well. 3D seems to work best when the camera is still with the action moving around it, fast camera pans tend to lose depth in my opinion.

First Flight (approx 69 – 71 mins) – Having secured his new pet Jake has to complete the bond by going for a ride, wow, you’d almost believe that this was written in to the story purely for 3D purposes! Unlike the chase scene mentioned previously this works beautifully with a greater distance between camera and the action and far less panning. In 2D it’s a nice calm scene in the film, in 3D it sucks you in and the sense of flight is magnified 10 fold. Again zero crosstalk and instant wow factor for anybody seeing 3D in the home for the first time.

The Destruction Of Home Tree (approx 96 – 103 mins) – From the moment the arrows start to fly you’re in for a 3D treat. The behind the chopper launch missile shots are very well done. The falling leaves jump out of your screen as Home Tree starts to burn, you’ll duck when the wood starts to explode but the absolute stand out bit of 3D of the whole film (for me at least) was the burning embers floating in the sky. The immersion this gives you in what is already the most distressing scene of the film adds so much to the whole experience. I can’t imagine anybody failing to be impressed or for that matter not agreeing that 3D really does add to the movie. If I had 2 minutes to sell somebody the idea of 3D in the home I would show them the scene where the chief dies.

There you have it, my favourite bits of 3D in the home version of Avatar 3D. Of course there are plenty of other scenes where 3D elements look brilliant (the futuristic computer displays deserve a special mention) but for overall scenes I think those 3 will take some beating! What do you think, what are your best 3D scenes in Avatar?

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
