That's got to be the question on the lips of anybody desperate to jump on the 3D TV bandwagon. Lets see what Samsung have put on the table for its first 3D offering...
Samsung UE40C7000
When it comes to releasing new technology into the home entertainment market it is always a careful balancing act. On one hand manufacturers want to be associated with cutting edge and breaking the mold. On the other hand they are aware that by being first their hardware will not only be perceived to be expensive but might actually be lacking in the content to make it shine. With this in mind you have to give kudos to Samsung for getting there's out there and giving us our first 3D TV.
At 40 inches you get the feeling that Samsung have made an educated decision in releasing a TV that sits nicely in the mid range of large screen panels. The higher price points that those extra few inches of screen attract could very well have made this evolution too expensive for all but the keenest audio/video'philes. A 40 incher holds no shame though. As it stands the Samsung UE40C7000 is still going to set you back an impressive £1799. Add on the extra couple of hundred pounds you'll need to take advantage of 3D and you can see that suddenly watching TV is not such a cheap hobby!
It's no secret that for that money you're not exactly going to be swamped with 3D content either, this is why the UE40C7000 HAS to stand up on its own merits as a television in order to give Samsung their first solid foothold on 3D. In this respect the C7000 delivers a lot of punch for the money. Based on Samsungs LED technology this set delivers a great contrast ratio, fluid motion and great looks (from the front at least). Colours are vibrant, Samsung have always been good in this regard. Standard definition broadcasts are reported to be right up there with the very best performing flat screen panels. This new Samsung is also one of a limited number of TVs that feature built in Freeview HD tuners - in reality you're getting 2 "new" technologies for the price of one with this set.
When it comes to connectivity this TV is no slouch either. Can anybody else remember when 2 HDMI ports was seen as generous? OK only me then. Anyway, the C7000 comes with no less than 4 HDMI ports, that's enough for your PS3, Sky HD, Xbox 360 Elite with room to spare. A couple of USB2 ports allow media to be played direct from storage or there is the option for streaming via various services or your own NAS if you like. All in there is no shortage of ways of getting your media to your screen with the C7000.
Samsung UE40C7000 Conclusion
It looks like Samsung have played it clever with the C7000. For your £1799 you get a TV that improves on what is already out there PLUS has the added bonus of 3D as a lovely bit of icing on the cake. Of course a £1799 TV isn't for everybody but for those looking to get on the 3D TV bandwagon at the earliest possible opportunity Samsung have delivered a TV that includes enough to make it a superb TV in its own right. Can't wait to see what the big brother C8000, and C9000 look like now.
The C7000 is currently available to buy from John Lewis for £1799 or you can buy a full 3D pack (including the C7000, BD-C6900 Bluray Player and 3D Glasses) for only £2148
I’ve had this TV for about a month and so far, I have been very pleased with it. Picture quality is outstanding–even standard definition channels look nice–and the features and connectivity options are very good (I wish it had an analog audio-out port, but few HDTV’s do anymore). The built-in speakers are good but not great. A couple of minor annoyances–there is a bit of a delay when you turn the unit on, and also when changing channels–but I believe this is fairly typical among similar LCD TVs. You may wish to play around with the picture settings–the default was very dim for me. It also took a bit longer to set up than I expected (the base requires some assembly).
